Women’s basketball announces all-court club to support trip to Italy

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Head Women’s Basketball Coach Samantha Quigley Smith announced the Full-Court Club campaign to raise funds for the team’s trip to Italy in June 2023.

The program’s first European tour will be a nine-day trip to Italy with stops in Rome, Milan and Venice. As part of the trip, SIUE student-athletes will experience the culture, receive SIUE course credits, and play against Italian professional teams.

“A trip of this magnitude is a momentous culture-building opportunity,” Smith said. “Our program is extremely excited to be immersed in what Italy has to offer, from its vibrancy to its academic opportunities. As these four years move forward so quickly for our student athletes, it is imperative that we offer life-changing experiences of growth and development in the form of such journeys.

As part of the team’s fundraising efforts, the Cougars will host a season opener on Saturday, Nov. 5. The performance will be followed by the first exhibition game of the season against Missouri S&T on Sunday, November 6.

“I’ve never been out of the country, so I’m lucky to have the opportunity to travel to Italy,” the chief guard said KK Rodriguez. “Doing it with my teammates makes it even better.”
