Vogue editors share the boots they’ll wear this season

The hot summer air has been replaced by brisk autumn winds and with it a whole new wardrobe we can indulge in. Cable knit sweaters, classic black tights, plaids and tartans, and of course, a really nice pair of boots. From knee combat to suede and bootie, fall boot options are plentiful.

We asked our editors for their thoughts on the perfect boot, which stands up to the wear and tear of New York’s cruel streets and is most in tune with their personal style. Some opted for more practical pairs while others were swept away by pairs that made a statement. Business writer Alexis Bennett has her eye on a pair of Ulla Johnson’s fall boots – infused with a touch of the southwest but designed for city living. (See above.) Editor-in-chief Jessie Heyman was inspired to purchase Loeffler Randall’s safari leather boots after spotting Margot Robbie wearing the same pair last year. Market editor Naomi Elizée opted for a pair of Dries Van Noten boots that will make onlookers green with envy. No matter the look, this post serves as proof: fashion and function can be friends.

I need a boot that can take me from the office to dinner and everywhere else. That’s why these fun loafer-inspired boots are at the top of my list this fall.

These Gianvito Rossi boots are the stuff of my dreams, literally. I just got my ’90s haircut inadvertently and came up with some fall wardrobe staples that look contemporary but not too retro. I started a thorough online search with these terms in mind and found this classic style as if Google was reading my mind, which very well could have been. (I try to turn off cookies as often as possible, but I’m pretty sure all of my devices are not just listening to my conversations, but also my whims). In any event. The narrow toe has the perfect amount of squareness so it doesn’t look clownish, the 3 “heel is high but not too high that I can’t take them on the (short) subway rides, and the mid-shank. calf is just below narrow-leg jeans and dresses. The description online called them a “timeless investment” and I totally agree.

I’m preparing for another winter by spending more time outdoors than usual and these Larroude laces with notched sole are the perfect boot for getting around town in any weather.

It wouldn’t be too much to say this: I really, really struggle with the boots. Every year when it’s too cold to bare my ankles, I get pissed off. My style is incredibly feminine (if I say so myself) and so the idea of big bulky boots makes me want to run in the opposite direction with my pointy heels! A few years ago I bought these suede boots from Sarah Flint and their good looks did all I needed: keep me warm without adding weight to my look. When I buy my next pair, I’ll basically try to recreate them.

It was love at first sight: two years ago I saw Margot Robbie in the most perfect below-knee boot and have been coveting these Loeffler Randall beauties ever since. This season, I will finally make them mine.

These Celine boots are an investment, but they are well worth it. I bought these boots three years ago on a trip to Paris, and they pair with just about anything. They hit the exact right spot above my calf, and even though the heel is high, I can still walk quite easily. I also observed them in a hunter green color. When you find the perfect pair, why move on?

I’m a loyal fan of the Chelsea boot and I’m currently eyeing this Proenza Schouler version for the fall season. Another of my all-time favorite boots is this set of Loewe lace-up boots, although they are no longer readily available you can still find them at Yoox and a few consignment stores like Cloakroom. With their sheepskin lined interior and suede exterior, they are a comfortable way to move from season to season.

These are by far my most comfortable high heeled boots, no pun intended. I love to wear them with leather shirt dresses and midi skirts during the day, and under wide leg pants or jeans with a vintage t-shirt after work hours. When I’m after a square rush moment, Miista comes up with the coolest, overkill options.

Fall is by far my favorite time of year. This season, I’m investing in a pair of black leather ankle boots. I looked at these equally sophisticated and stylish Jimmy Choo. The subtle glitter details around the sole to match the chunky silhouette make this pair stand out.

I have some cognac suede Loeffler Randall boots that I’ve worn to death, so I’m looking at this pair to add to my spin. It’s really hard to find classic, simple and comfortable boots that don’t have a weird heel or flashy material, so LR is my go-to!

Every two years, I invest in two pairs of classic black boots – one heeled and one flat – and wear them until they almost collapse. I need a refresh and I think I could never get enough of these timeless pairs of Marion Parke and Wandler.

Jenni Kayne’s canyon boots are inspired by vintage hiking gear, but I’ve found they fit just as well on a city street as they do on a nature trail. I would know, I wore them on both.

I wear these boots at least once a week. Yes, these are cowboy boots, which I know is intimidating to some people, but they are sleek and subtle cowboy boots. The topstitching and the steel toe are two great details that also make them special.

As soon as fall arrives, I feel like my hunt for the perfect boot resumes. Fortunately, this season, my colleague Carlos Nazario made things easier by organizing a collection from the archives of Italian shoemakers Buttero. I love the curved details of these knee-length riding boots. And the best part is they’re flat so I can wear them pretty much all day.

I’ve never been a Margiela Tabi person, but lately I’ve found myself drawn to split-toe boots (very polarized). I think they would look so cool with a simple white t-shirt and black pants. They would definitely turn heads in the streets and I live for that.

I feel more comfortable in a boot, which I attribute to my childhood on a Texas Hill Country ranch. I feel like I live millions of miles away, swapping taxis for pasture, but when I put on a pair of cowboy boots, it’s like I’m never left. Texas-born and handmade, City Boots come in just about any color in the sun. I refuse to believe that cowboy boots will ever go out of style (as evidenced by the recent article by fashion and style editor Christian Allaire), which is why I have big plans for a pair of white boots this fall.

There is something very electro soft about P448’s white plush boots, I’m not sure how they would stay clean for more than a few steps around town, so I imagine they look more like a party boot from P448. interior. It’s hard to find options with sizes over 40 or 41 so I’m looking.

The only boot that really seems to last forever is, of course, the beloved Dr. Martens! I’ve owned my pair of flowers for years now, and they still look (and feel) good like new. Docs are a great shoe all year round, but fall is the best time to pair them with my favorite jeans and dresses.
