New York RB momentarily secured a three-way tie at the top of MLS’s Eastern Conference, beating Toronto FC 2-0 on Saturday.
Goals from Lewis Morgan and Luquin secured all three points for NYRB, with Morgan scoring his seventh of the season, heading in from a corner just in the second minute.
Luquin secured all three points in the 56th minute, smashing Quentin Westberg in spectacular fashion from outside the penalty area after Tom Barlow was initially denied in a one-on-one.
With just one win in their previous six games, the three points were essential for Gerhard Struber’s side.
The Philadelphia Union could only get a 1-1 draw at home to Cincinnati, meaning they join New York on 26 points in the Eastern Conference lead, but City still have to play Sunday against the Colorado Rapids.
A brace from Ercan Kara helped Orlando City move into fourth in the East, coming back from Wednesday’s draw in New England to beat Houston Dynamo 2-1.
They edged out CF Montreal, who lost 1-0 to ten-man Austin FC after Maxi Urruti’s 67th-minute goal.
Elsewhere in the East, Chicago Fire beat DC United 1-0 in the battle between the conference’s lowest-ranked teams, while Columbus Crew and Charlotte played out a 1-1 draw.
There have also been stalemates at the top of the Western Conference, with Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders drawing 1-1, as well as the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Portland Timbers.
That allowed Real Salt Lake to take two points away from LAFC, following their 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in Saturday’s final game.
Salt Lake captain Marcelo Silva opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after Jefferson Savarino kicked in from a corner, and Savarino doubled the margin in the 81st with a fine solo effort.
The Vancouver Whitecaps stayed within reach of Western playoff berths, beating FC Dallas 2-0.
