European travel tech company Holidu recently released its Generational Travel Index for 2022, as reported by CNBC. To create its ranking, the company compiled a list of all the countries in the world’s leading city and analyzed them based on specific factors aligned with each generation’s values and travel desires.
The company’s research found that 71% of Millennials use Instagram at least once a week and center their travel plans around the destination’s food and drink offerings and more than half are parents with children still living at home.
In evaluating the best cities for millennial travelers (defined as those born between 1981 and 1995), Holidu took into account which are the most “Instagrammable” (i.e. the number of Instagram hashtags each has accumulated), how many of its national dishes have made the “top 100” and the overall friendliness of each destination.
Here are the top five cities in Holidu for Millennials:
1. Paris, France
2. Barcelona, Spain
3. Madrid, Spain
4. New York, USA
5. Miami, USA
The long-famous “City of Light” ranked first among all major cities in the world. Home to some of the most famous landmarks in the world, Paris has received over 137 hashtags on Instagram. The French capital is also home to Europe’s busiest theme park, Disneyland Paris, which is of course a family favourite. Paris also has two of the “top 100” of the best national dishes.
When looking at major cities around the world in terms of Instagram hashtag numbers alone, Paris actually came in second behind London, which had 158 million. In third place for hashtags, Istanbul, Dubai in fourth and New York in fifth place.
Interestingly, the world cities with the most national dishes ranked in the “top 100” are (in order of first to fifth) Naples, Rome, Milan, Florence and – the only city outside of Italy to appear in the top five – Beijing.
