Affectionately known as La Grande Dame d’Angkor, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor has been welcoming travelers to Siem Reap, Cambodia since 1932. Designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in a style that combines Khmer art and furnishings with Art Deco influences, the Grand Hotel opened its doors with only 63 rooms, all with private bathrooms, unique for the time. From Charlie Chaplin to Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama, a host of celebrity guests have enjoyed the hospitality here.

The property, along with its sister hotel, Le Royal, in Phnom Penh, was taken over by Fairmont Raffles Hotels International in 1997 at the invitation of King Sihanouk of Cambodia. After a carefully planned restoration in 2019 and the pause in travel during the pandemic, the historic Raffles Grand Hotel at Angkor has finally reopened its doors and the enthusiastic faithful are delighted with the transformation.

The old is golden, but brighter

Returning guests will notice that the hotel’s famous facade and entire exterior now shines white, rather than its former cream-beige hue that was the color of French colonial architecture across Indochina.

Bedrooms now feature lighter and brighter interiors along with the addition of Segafredo coffee machines, USB charging stations and Simmons pillow top mattresses. French doors, which open onto street scenes or the hotel’s plantation-style gardens, have been upgraded, and each room now has a desk and vintage rotary phone, thanks in part to the extra floor space created by removing cabinets and replacing them with built-in cabinets.
