Spezia vs AC Milan: Key battles and predictions

AC Milan face Spezia tomorrow afternoon after the 2-0 San Siro midweek victory over Venezia. Milan struggled with Spezia last season in both games with the defensive wall and we came away with a 3-0 win and a 2-0 loss. Here are some key battles to watch out for during the game:

Key battles

Right winger vs left rear

Daniele Verde vs. Théo Hernandez

It was a big blow between Gyasi and Verde as they are just as technically gifted and have the pace on the wing, but I picked this battle because Hernandez has been so hollow defensively so far this season. He scored a nice goal and provided an assist last time around, but he’s easily beaten and often moved in defense. Verde shoots at the defender and has a good cross so he will have to be controlled as Spezia are a tough team to crack.

Right winger vs left rear

Alexis Saelemaekers vs. Simone Bastoni

Another interesting battle considering the previous game where Saelemaekers was the key to breaking down the Venice squad and finding an opening. He will need to provide a similar dynamism against a team we fought against last season. Bastoni is very physical and doesn’t hesitate to jump on mistakes and lead the counterattack. The Saelemaekers will need to make a painstaking change in both attack and defense.

Central defensive midfielder vs central midfielder

Sandro Tonali against Mehdi Bourabia

A battle in the middle of the field where two physical players with a good range of passing will seek to surpass themselves. Tonali will have to make sure Bourabia doesn’t have the opportunity to break the lines with his passes to quick wingers while simultaneously releasing our players up front quickly at the break before Spezia puts all 11 players behind the ball.

Green winner

Winner of the Saelemaekers

Winner of Tonali
