Serie A standings 2022/23: Updated standings, classifica as Milan, Inter, Napoli, Juventus and Roma battle for Italian scudetto

Reigning Serie A champions AC Milan have not let up in the new season with an unbeaten start and four wins in their first six matches.

The Rossoneri are tied with an overhaul Naples side atop the table with 14 points after the two triumphed in their Matchweek 6 contests. Each won by a narrow one-goal margin: Napoli got an 89th-minute winner against Spezia, while the AC Milan needed a penalty goal from Olivier Giroud to secure a 2-1 victory at Sampdoria.

He sets up a juicy game on September 18 when Napoli visit AC Milan‘s San Siro stadium, where they won 1-0 last season. It will be the first trip to the renowned venue for Napoli’s new hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, while influential Milan winger Rafael Leao will miss the game after picking up a red card against Sampdoria.

Atalanta could take the lead in Serie A with a home win on Sunday against promoted Cremonese. Udinese, Lazio, Romeand Juventus could all stay close to the top spots by winning their matches between Sunday and Monday.

Monza are still rooted to the bottom of the table after losing their first five games. On Sunday they have their best chance of securing their first Serie A point when they travel to face other promoted players Lecce.

The Sporting News brings you a comprehensive update on the current standings of Italy’s top flight from the 2022/23 season, from the title race to the relegation battle.

Serie A title race for Scudetto

Defending Champions AC Milan and a rejuvenated Naples are two of the most in-form teams among the pre-season favourites. They are level on points after six matches and they face each other at the San Siro ahead of the international break in September.

But it’s on the surprise side Atalanta who could find himself alone at the top of the table if he can take care of business against promoted Cremonese on Sunday.

InterMilan (two defeats in six) jostle throughout their start to the campaign, while José Mourinho Rome also manage to stay close. perennial favorite Juventus (8th) have some catching up to do and it starts with a home game against relegation candidate Salernitana on Sunday.

European Serie A Places

As one of the highest-ranked nations in Europe, Italy’s Serie A has four automatic UEFA Champions League berths that go to the top four teams. There are also two tickets for the Europa League (5th place and winner of the Coppa Italia) and one for the Conference League (sixth place).

Italy’s current participants in the UEFA Champions League — Milano, Inter, Naplesand Juventus – are favorites to reclaim their place in the prestigious competition next season and finish in the top four. But the race should be tighter given the quality of the other challengers.

Atalanta, Romeand Lazio probably feel they have what it takes to enter the Champions League Top 4 zone, while Udinese could turn out to be the surprise entrant if he can maintain his initial form.

The consolation prize for fifth place and sixth place are the Europa League and Conference League spots, respectively. And if the Coppa Italia winner is one of the four teams in the top four, then the Europa League place that comes with that trophy will go to sixth place, with the Conference League place going to seventh place.

Relegation to Serie A

The bottom three spots in the table are the traps that send those finishers to second-tier Serie B.

The three promoted teams from Serie B are already in the mix to avoid the immediate downfall. Lecce, Cremoneseand Monza occupy three of the bottom four places in the standings after five matches.

Sampdoria looks to be in for another tough season after finishing six points above the drop zone last season. Spezia also managed to survive with an identical total of points and will play a third consecutive campaign in the Italian top flight.

The team that is currently out of the relegation picture is Salernowho avoided relegation by a single point after an incredible run to end the season. bologna sacked manager Sinisa Mihajlovic for fear of becoming a relegation candidate (former Spezia coach Thiago Motta replaces him), while Empoli must be careful not to relax after a 14th place finish in 2021/22.
