A charter bus driver who refused to let high school football players with a Mexican flag on his bus last week has been fired.

The driver worked for Tri-State Travel, a bus company under contract with the Rock Island-Milan school district for several years, according to Andrew Hillard, president of the company.

The Rock Island High School boys’ football team were supposed to take a Tri-State Travel charter bus to an out-of-town football game against Dunlap on Thursday, September 16, but the bus driver refused to allow it entry to students carrying the flag of Mexico in celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, which was on that day.
