Despite its imposing exterior, this iconic building has been redesigned from its origins as a university to become a welcoming and cosmopolitan meeting place. Offering a different kind of hospitality experience in Amsterdam, it combines privacy with instant access to the bustling city center.

“We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate our fifth anniversary than to return to Amsterdam, the city where it all began, with the first five-star property in our portfolio,” said Loes Dingemans, CEO of Pillows Hotels. “Maurits at the Park is all our brand stands for: exceptional hospitality in an intimate and elegant setting. Located in a monumental building in the heart of the city, the hotel is perfectly connected to a lively park, offering its guests many experiences without having to leave its premises.

Located in vibrant Oosterpark, the hotel was designed by Office Winhov, the award-winning architectural firm, as an open and essential part of the neighborhood where everyone is welcome. More than 4,000 square meters of parkland will be returned to the people of Amsterdam, removing all existing partitions and fences. The hotel’s open invitation is also extended to the park’s adorable feathered friends, thanks to nesting boxes, feeding areas and an aviary that helps protect the birds. Evergreen gardens are a constant highlight of the landscape.

“We are adding the hotel to the park; usually it’s the other way around,” added Uri Gilad of Office Winhov, who took into account the building’s unique location and complex features of its past. This is particularly evident in the new wing of the hotel, where different types of windows harmoniously connect the interior with the exterior; the new and the old intermingle harmoniously, becoming one. Warm lighting transforms the monumental space at night, adding a serene touch and creating a relaxed ambience.

Attention to the building’s heritage has also been applied to the interior. Interior design manager Studio Linse is no stranger to the brand, as the company won an award for its work at Pillows Hotel Ter Borch Zwolle.

A “noble simplicity”, as Paul Linse described it, runs throughout the hotel, connecting the meticulously selected interior elements. Soft, tactile materials and a warm, earthy color palette create a soothing harmony, while comfortable furnishings are ideal for lounging away from the bustle of the city. It’s the perfect counterpart to rugged exteriors.
