Pep explains how Man City star will improve after Carabao Cup loss

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has opened up about how Phil Foden will improve after missing a penalty in the Carabao Cup loss to West Ham.

City have dominated the competition since 2017, lifting the trophy in each of the past four seasons. But that was not the case this time around as David Moyes’ side were victorious at the London Stadium.

It ended 0-0 after regulation time thanks to some prominent saves from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. Then the Frenchman had to divert his attention from the penalties.

Mark Noble gave the Irons the lead by confidently sending his free kick. Phil foden then dragged his effort away, giving West Ham the advantage.

Everyone has converted and then it’s up to Said Benrahma to win at home. He beat Zack Steffen over 12 yards to send Moyes’ men to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

After the loss Guardiola said: “It was an amazing race so we finished well in terms of performances, we played a very good game and created a lot of chances against a team that defends very deeply.

“On penalties they were better, kudos to West Ham and we’ll be back next year.”

The Spaniard then revealed how Foden would learn from his disappointment. “Unfortunately Phil missed it, but it’s experience and when you have that kind of experience next time around, he’ll be better,” he said.

Guardiola went on to congratulate West Ham, who are competing for a European place again this season. “One of our toughest games at home last season was against them,” he added.

“They are doing well in the Premier League, in the Europa League and now they are in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup. A fantastic team, a fantastic manager.

City’s next game is a league clash against Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace. The Hammers, meanwhile, head to Aston Villa.

Man City “losing ground” in attacking race

Reports claim that City are falling behind AC Milan in the search for a Brazilian striker.

Guardiola needs a new striker after Sergio Aguero leaves this summer. He hoped to land Harry Kane but the Citizens could not reach an agreement.

The Internacional’s Yuri Alberto is a man on their wishlist. The player scored 18 goals in all competitions last season.

Sports witness, citing Brazilian press articles, state that Milan have a “verbal agreement” in place with Alberto.

They are expected to pay around 20 million euros for his signing. This is despite his release clause of an astonishing value of 80 million euros.

The news means City will have to act quickly if they want Alberto to become Aguero’s successor.
