Leonardo Spinazzola receives heartwarming farewells from Italian teammates before undergoing Achilles operation


Leonardo Spinazzola was greeted warmly by his Italian teammates as he prepares to undergo surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Having been one of the players in the tournament, the 28-year-old will no longer play any role in Euro 2020 and is expected to spend a long time on the sidelines.

Before he went under the knife, however, his teammates Azzurri made sure to give him a wonderful farewell.

As the team and staff sat together having a meal at the hotel, Spinazzola jumped on his crutches and was applauded by Roberto Mancini’s team.

Each player, as well as manager Mancini, then kissed the ex-Juventus and Atalanta man in beautiful scenes shared on the official Twitter account of the Italian national team.

On the return flight from Germany, the Italians cheered up their colleague by singing his name.

Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi took control of the plane’s tannoy and led the team chanting “Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, Spina, Spina”.

Former England striker Alan Shearer praised Spinazzola on BBC coverage and described his injury as “a blow” to Italy ahead of their semi-final clash with Spain.
