For the past five years, Yvonne Orji has played the deeply independent and extremely confident (at least professionally) best friend Molly on HBO Unsafe. In real life and on vacation, the Nigeria-born actress often goes solo as well, and has spent much of the last month touring Italy and Morocco on her own. “I like to do whatever I want to do, and group projects are not my best friend,” Orji snaps on the subject.
In advance of Unsafethe final season of, now available, Orji, who also released a memoir, Confused by Jesus, earlier this year I chatted with Condé Nast Traveler on hotel tubs, learning to relax in Bora Bora and the magic of filming his HBO comedy special in his grandfather’s village in Nigeria.
How a tourist should visit Nigeria:
You have to go and visit Lagos. You can’t say you’ve been to Nigeria if you haven’t been to Lagos. Yes, there are other cities, but Lagos, there is no place on earth like it. Lagos is a chaotic wonder. After being in America for six years, we came back and my cousins ââsaid, “Okay. We’ll come and get you tonight to go out.” I said, “Okay, great. What time?” He was like, “Around 1:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m.” I said to myself, “Am I? What is that ? Why ? He said, “Because that’s when it all starts.” I was like, “When are we going to end? “We stayed out all night and got back at 6.30am. The sun came up with us. Like, aren’t you all tired? The food is delicious, and there’s always a new restaurant coming up. You meet young, vibrant and beautiful black people who are entrepreneurs, who open businesses, who come back from UK or US and settle in. You can find your tribe in any crevasse in Lagos. J love it.
Her favorite vacation to date:
I’m not going to lie, Bora Bora was pretty sexy. Just being able to be alone in peace, with a view of the ocean. I had one of these private pool bungalows so you can literally jump from your pool into the ocean. Being able to relax and do whatever you want to do, because when you work so hard, vacations are like work too. You’re like, I pay so much money I should do this and that. No, you can also pay a lot of money to do nothing, and it’s still a vacation. I had to tell my immigrant mind that doing nothing is always good.
Her ideal travel partners, when she has them:
I’m not good at organizing. I have my travel agent, Jonathan, and I’m like, âHey, put this together. Let’s create our itinerary of whatever I want. Introduce me to the really amazing hotels, etc. etc.â Once we have it. budget, once we get it all locked in, then I’ll be like, âHey, guys. Here is where I am going to be. Here is what I will do. And if you want to join, here is his number to call. “
