European Commission President and Italian Prime Minister visit Israel amid European energy crisis | JNS

According to a report by AFP.

“The two leaders were due to hold energy talks in Israel, which has transitioned from a natural gas importer to an exporter in recent years due to significant offshore discoveries,” the report said.

Von der Leyen is due to meet Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Tuesday, with the talks to focus “in particular on energy cooperation”, the European Commission said in a statement.

Italy’s prime minister is on his first trip to the Middle East since taking office last year, and he too is expected to discuss energy and food security during his two-day visit, according to AFP.

On Tuesday, the two European leaders will also meet Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh in Ramallah.

Meanwhile, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev will award von der Leyen an honorary doctorate during his visit.

“The University pays tribute to President von der Leyen for her political acumen, her contributions to Germany’s security and social justice and her efforts on behalf of women and children, her fight against anti-Semitism and her commitment to strengthening ties with the State of Israel,” the university said in a statement.

Prior to assuming his current role, von der Leyen held numerous ministerial positions in the German government.
