Atletico Madrid suffer shocking La Liga loss ahead of Man Utd clash

Much has been said about Manchester United’s below-par form in 2022, but things are looking even worse for their next Champions League opponents.

United are set to travel to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 fixtures next Wednesday.

Seven days before that first leg, Atletico suffered a painful home defeat to La Liga’s worst team this week.

Atletico, who have now lost four of their last six matches, were beaten 1-0 by a Levante side who had won just once in their opening 23 league games this season.

Gonzalo Melero scored Levante’s goal, which was good value for their shock win, after registering five shots on target against Atletico’s.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone was far from happy at the end of the evening.

His side were now 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid and were in a real battle just to secure a place in the top four.

“We played a bad game,” Simeone said in his post-match press conference, translated by Football Espana.

“We lost a great opportunity to evolve in a good situation in La Liga and we will have to make an effort to doubt.

“Loss always hurts. It will always bother me and hurt me. Today relaxed and tomorrow we talk a bit to say what I think and see how they feel.”

Atletico will now travel to Osasuna on Saturday, four days before hosting United, who travel to Leeds this weekend.

Despite the negative atmosphere around Old Trafford, United are effectively unbeaten in eight games if you count their penalty shootout loss to Middlesbrough as a draw.

They will always be underdogs at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, but four away teams have now won there this season, with Levante following the example of Liverpool, AC Milan and Mallorca.
